Lot 2975
Anonymous, circa 7th-8th centuries. Amulet (Lead, 24 mm, 3.39 g, 12 h), pendant. The Adoration of the Magi: the Mother of God, nimbate, seated to the right on a high-backed chair, holding nimbate infant Christ, confronted by the three magi, standing to the left behind each other, extending their hands. All within a decorated border. Rev. Two concentric circular legends; outer legend: OHCΦOHOIVOPANCCOVCⲰ (likely nonsensical); onner legend: O ΦOPOΛNTIH ('the wearer'?); all within a decorated border. Unpublished in the standard references. An interesting Byzantine magical amulet with intriguing iconography and inscription. Minor edge chipping (likely from the suspension loop) and hairline surface cracks, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.
